EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is an evidence-based treatment that supports processing traumatic memories through the use of a specific therapeutic format coupled with bilateral stimulation-- most commonly moving the eyes back and forth, listening to alternating sounds in each ear, or tapping one side of the body then the other.
Initially developed to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), EMDR can also be useful for more complex forms of trauma due to how it supports clients being present with thoughts, memories, sensations, and emotions of traumatic events. Over the course of treatment, EMDR helps clients reduce distress, triggers, and negative self-concept that often occurs as a result of traumatic events.
How does EMDR Work?
EMDR works by helping your brain reduce trauma-responses related to traumatic memories and present day triggers. This is done through a mechanism called "Adaptive Information Processing." Adaptive Information Processing allows our brains to revisit old memories and utilize present-day knowledge to change their relationship to those events and reduce the intensity of feelings, thoughts, and emotions caused by traumatic events. After the intensity of the original memories and sensations have been sufficiently reduced, client can begin to explore new adaptive ways of thinking about themselves and the world, which reduces present day assumptions and triggers.
For example, clients may start off with the belief "I am powerless and nothing is in my control" and move toward thinking "I did the best I could and I am safe now" by the end of processing. Not only does this reduce distress, but helps support clients in trusting their ability to cope and build resilience even when life becomes challenging in the future.
While this is a simple way of explaining the model, a more in-depth version of how API works can be found on EMDRIA's website.
Can You do Virtual EMDR Therapy?
Yes! Clients looking for online therapy can get just as much benefit from clients who attend sessions in person. Similar to other forms of virtual therapy, sessions are conducted via a secure audiovisual conferencing platform and bilateral stimulation is conducted via resources and links sent directly to clients.
